Frank Gehry: The Modern Architect of Today
Frank Gehry is a Canadian architect born in Toronto, Canada in 1929. He studied architecture at Harvard University and revolutionized how structures are built with his fascination with geometry; he truly believed that the manipulation of shapes and sizes could produce exceptional buildings. Frank Gehry is described as the most bold architect of our time; he wasn’t afraid to construct unusual fabrications that have captured the attention of people all over the world.
Gehry loved contemporary art. After leaving Harvard and moving to California, he started a furniture company called ‘Easy Edges’, where he sold furniture made completely of scraps of cardboard. This business was very successful and opened doors to a new type of modern, artistic furniture. In the 1980’s, he captured the attention of many when he began constructing homes out of steel, adding daring angles and skylights wherever he could.

Gehry was criticized a great deal for his choice of materials when building. He enjoys using corrugated metal, which some people believe leaves an unfinished and somewhat crude appearance to his structures; many, however, are fascinated by the outcome of his creations, and some travel thousands of miles to see his buildings. Some of the most notable of his works include The Walt Disney Concert Hall, The Dancing House in Prague, and the Guggenheim Museum in Spain.
At the age of 85, Gehry continues to design buildings. He is in the process of building a museum in Abu Dhabi, as well as the new Facebook headquarters in California and a memorial to Dwight Eisenhower in Washington, D.C. On top of all this, he runs his own architectural corporation to this day.
